  Chapter 1:

  Love Lost

Piers Kaaumoana watched as the woman he loved was swept away and wed to his best friend, Dr. “Love Shark” Mateo Mann, the infamous sex therapist. It was when Rae Hooper said, “I do,” that Piers realized he’d lost her for good.

A gentle breeze flowed over his body, cooling the hot Hawaiian air. Leis made of fragrant purple orchids adorned the guests who watched the blissful couple. Piers stood alone on the beach watching his friends and neighbors enjoying the festivities. Never before in his life had he felt so alone.

The maid of honor moved to stand by his side. “Hi, I’m Tara Jackson,” the stunning African American woman said. She’d only arrived from the mainland an hour before the ceremony, so he hadn’t been introduced to her.

Piers found her attractive, with her long hair braided into cornrows and adorned with turquoise-colored beads, but he was determined not to allow his attraction to show. He had to look down at her, estimating that she was about five feet three inches tall to his six feet. Her full lips parted to offer a bright white, gentle smile. Doe-brown eyes held a warmth that made him uncomfortable as she watched him. He’d promised himself that there was no way he was going to take an interest in another woman. Not after Rae.

“Hi. Excuse me, Miss Jackson, I have some details to attend to.” He walked away without another word, approaching Mateo with purpose.

“I want to talk to you,” Piers murmured into his friend’s ear. The handsome groom smiled with pearly white teeth, bright against his tanned skin.

“Sure, buddy, I’ll be right with you.” Mateo leaned over to whisper to his bride who stood chatting with guests.

It nearly killed Piers to watch Mateo kiss Rae passionately. Piers waited impatiently, turning away from the heartrending sight. His chest ached with the pain of loss. He was sure he’d put on a good act to hide how angry and upset he was. Though his smile was forced, no one seemed to notice the agony in his soul. The day was bright and sunny, but he thought that there should have been a storm to match his mood.

As Mateo followed Piers, he grinned and slapped him on his shoulder, then kept his eyes on Rae. She smiled at their housekeeper, Moki. The maternal woman hugged Rae and wiped tears from her eyes, then continued chatting.

“What can I do for you, Piers?”

Mateo’s deep-brown eyes were filled with joy. Piers swallowed the lump in his throat and fought for control.

“I want you to promise me that you’ll be good to her. After all, your track record when it com
es to Rae is lousy.”

The joy disappeared, Mateo’s gaze turning to ice as his eyes met Piers’s.

“I promised to love and honor her, Piers. I meant every word of my vows. She deserves to be treated with respect. I admit that in the past, I screwed up big-time, but that’s over with. Don’t worry, my friend. I’ll take good care of her.”

Though Mateo looked like he was sincere, Piers didn’t trust him.

“You’d better, or you’ll have to answer to me.”

The men were face-to-face now, their longtime friendship reduced to a wall of chilled rage that stood between them.

“What are you two talking about?” Rae moved to stand between them as though she knew she was the subject of their defensive moods. “The past is the past, Piers. Mateo and I are fine now. Please, relax and enjoy yourself. Promise me?”

His attention diverted to the beautiful woman that Mateo slipped his arms around, Piers fought to bring out his best smile. He was sure it looked as though he’d swallowed a pile of dirt.

“We’re fine, sweetheart. I was simply making sure everything was all right with you both.” His mouth tasting like ashes, he studied her grey eyes, the flecks of green in them glowing bright with happiness. She looked so content that he sucked in a deep breath and lied through his teeth.

“I wish you both all the happiness in the world, Rae. May I kiss the bride?” he asked, his eyes never leaving hers.

Mateo answered. “Sure you can. Just remember that what happened between the three of us before is done with. She’s mine now.”

Hiding the sneer that nearly lifted the corner of his mouth, Piers took her in his arms and gave her the most gentle of kisses. Though he let her go, he wanted to pick her up and run off with her. Mateo had been hard on her in the past, yet now he was a picture-perfect groom.

Rae smiled as Piers let her go, reaching her hand up to cup his cheek. “I hope you find someone to love, Piers. You deserve to be blessed with happiness.”

The tension left his shoulders at her words.

“I’ll be fine, Rae. Take good care of yourself, and if you ever need a friend, call me. I mean it. I’m available twenty-four hours a day.”

Sunlight glinted off Rae’s mahogany curls, giving her a breathtaking glow. He had to accept that she was lost to him and that he’d never hold her in his arms again.

Protective all of a sudden, Mateo backed her away from Piers. “I already told you she’ll be fine. Come on, Rae, our guests are waiting.”

  “But Mateo, I want—”

Interrupting, Piers said, “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ll see you later.”

Though it burned like wildfire in his chest, he turned and walked away from them. He wanted to get as far away as possible. The only problem was that since he was the best man, he had no choice but to stay at the reception. How he was going to say good things about Mateo, he didn’t know.

They’d been friends since public school and had never fought until Rae entered their lives. The strange thing was that they’d shared many women over the years and had never felt jealous of each other. Rae would have left for good if he and Mateo hadn’t hidden their anger from her.

Piers felt his stomach clench as he watched them walk away arm in arm. Once, Rae looked over her shoulder to offer a fleeting smile. The cool wind lifted her hair. For a moment her face was hidden by the silken curtain, and then she turned away. He wanted to shout out his anguish and beg her to come back to him, but he knew there was no use. She loved Mateo with no holds barred. She was his, and nothing would change that.

“Rae will be fine, you know.” The voice was husky and smooth, as though the woman had just finished a shot of whiskey.

Piers moved his gaze to meet the doe eyes of Tara. She appeared to be sad as well. He hardened his heart and once again chose to leave her side.

“Of course she will.” He wandered over to the circle of friends and family members who surrounded a large campfire. This area of the beach had been designated by Mateo for celebrations. Each week they held a luau there where the resort guests could learn Hawaiian dancing.

There were a number of local women who came to do shows for them. Some of the men and women performed fire dances as well in the late evenings. Piers watched as Kona and Layla prepared for the show. His muscular body glistening in the firelight, Kona laughed at something a guest said to him, and the woman’s eyes filled with desire. Kona always brought that kind of reaction from the female guests, though he kept it professional. His sister, Layla, never treated the male guests with anything other than respect and kept her distance as well.

Piers watched as the sun set among a rainbow of colors above a calm ocean, barely able to wait until dark when he could slip away and go home, Soothing waves crested and splashed ashore, hitting the rock wall to the left of the beach only to splash up and dissipate into the air. The sharp boulders stopped the rhythm with a crash of spray beginning the cycle again.

“You are in a lot of pain tonight, aren’t you, Piers?”

Moki’s tender words caused him to tense. He thought he’d hidden his anguish well.

“I’m fine, sweetheart. She was meant for him.”

Moki knew him too well to give up her motherly concern. She saw right through him.

“Piers, I’ve known you since you were a child. Rae is still upset that she hurt you. Life does go on after your heart sings and then falls. Come talk to me, honey.”

Over the years, he’d always gone to Moki to share his feelings, but tonight was different. He’d never had a broken heart before. No woman had ever slipped past his defenses before, not since…he felt a stabbing pain as he thought of Keilani. As he always did, Piers pushed the thoughts of her away.

When the drums picked up the beat, the entertainment began. From a distance, Piers watched the bride and groom, hiding behind an insincere smile. To those who didn’t know him, he knew he’d appear happy for the loving couple. He knew that because he’d been there before. Twice he’d known bliss, then crashed to the ground with nothing to show for it.

Once again, Mateo leaned over and gently kissed his new wife. Piers had had enough and turned on his heel to leave. He managed two steps before Tara stopped him.

“Excuse me.” Though he tried to walk around her, she placed her palm on his wrist and stopped him.

“Look, Piers, I know about you, Rae, and Mateo. Your ménage left you out in the cold. I understand that. No matter what, I’m not interested in your heart. I simply want a friendship while I’m here for the next month. Since we’ll both share Mateo’s home while they’re on their honeymoon, I thought we could get to know each other on a platonic level. What do you say?”

Uncomfortable with the woman for some reason, Piers shook off her hand, his arm tingling from where she’d touched him.

“I’m not interested in talking or otherwise. Tell the happy couple I had to leave. I have a baby to deliver.”

“Run away if you must, my friend, but if you leave, they’ll know why and be hurt. Rae cares about you a lot. We’ve had a chat and I’m aware of the closeness you shared with them. Give it a shot and stay for a while. If you fake it well enough, neither one will believe you are feeling like a kicked pup fleeing with your tail between your legs.”

He was surprised she’d figured him out so well and backed away. “I said I’m leaving. You can say what you want about it.”

At that, he turned without looking back and left her standing there. The fact that he didn’t run helped him retain some of his dignity, but he knew she was right. When he crested the cliff, he looked down on the partygoers and wanted to shout out his ire. Instead, he turned and walked away.

  * * * *

Mateo watched his lifetime best friend staring at him as he held his bride. Piers might think he felt nothing but pleasure now that he’d won Rae for himself, but it wasn’t so. They’d spent many passionate nights between the three of them, but that was done. He had no idea how to mend the break in their friendshi
p. It was like they’d hit a brick wall that couldn’t be moved. It was the end.

He knew that Rae was upset about the breakup but couldn’t change a thing. Although he’d watched Piers and Tara’s brief chats from afar, he knew Piers would run. Forgiveness and dismay mixed with loss dampened the celebration for him. Instead of worrying about his friend, he focused his attention on Rae. She was his life now and always would be.

When she looked up to meet his gaze, his heart melted. He’d nearly lost her twice. For the rest of their lives she was his. Mateo felt humbled and leaned over to offer her a passionate kiss filled with promise.

  Chapter 2:

  The Hunt Begins

Tara watched as her housemate ate his breakfast without acknowledging she was in the same room with him. Piers hadn’t even given her a nod of “good morning.” She could play his game well. It would be a great challenge to melt his icy demeanor. The bride and groom had slept in, so she was alone with him.

“Delicious. I’ll have to tell Moki how much I enjoyed her fruit medley. I wonder what the star-shaped fruit is called,” she said in a murmur loud enough for him to hear her.

She had to bite back laughter when his shoulders tensed. This would be easy as pie.

“I understand you need a model for your Kegel classes.”

Still, he wouldn’t talk, yet this time his eyes met hers with a mild look of surprise.

“Rae told me she really enjoyed working with you as a model. She said you’re the best of the best.”
